I made word family dice on this free programmable app. The students shook the dice and wrote the word under real word or not real word on a large piece of butcher paper.
I gave each student a word family and they came up with a list of words that they thought fit into that word family. They each typed them and created a word cloud on the IPAD. I printed out each word family and then gave the students a different word family. I put their word clouds on the desks so they had to walk around and find the words that went with their word family. When they were done we used it as a matching center during reading stations.
Word Cloud is a free, easy to use app...they were finished typing in minutes!
Thanks to a fun reminder from my sons second grade teacher, we used fun flaps to practice spelling. I was a little nervous about them being able to do each fold but every student was able to make it. I did the first two folds to make sure that the square was perfect and then we folded and wrote the spelling words together. We thought of fortunes for the middle and then wrote them in.
First the student asks to pick a word and then the student spells the word, then he/she asks again and spells the next word. On the third time they ask the student opens up the flap and tells their fortune. This was sooo much fun! They practiced for a good 15 minutes and then wanted to take them out to recess! Here's a little video in case you've forgotten how to make this blast from the past:
This is a great book I use but if you don't want to make copies it's just as easy to make your own. Just start with a plain 9x9 piece of paper.

My Coworker also had a great idea... it's a little like slap it with a spelling twist. In groups or centers you lay out spelling words or sight words. The teacher calls out the spelling word. The student who slaps it the first has to spell the word. If they spell it correctly they get to keep the word. Keep playing until all words are taken. The one with the most wins.
Word Family Scattergories™: This activity is named after the
Scattergories™ board game. Spin one of the
word wheels below. They then use the worksheet to record words that can be made
in the time the sand timer takes to empty. They can use initial consonants or
consonant blends to make words. Students then read the words they have made.
They must cross out any words that other players also made. They get a point
for each word they make that no one else made. (Use
a paper clip and pencil to spin the wheels)
The students were split into three groups. I wrote 3 different word families on the wipe board. They had to think of a word for that word family, write it on the board and then pass the marker to the person next in line. They had two minutes and then we read the words and counted up their points. They got one point for each real word they made. We played four times because they were having soooo much fun with it. The longer we played the better they got at coming up with more words. I LOVED this one.
