I took 3 pieces of paper and folded them to make a flip book. If you want to decompose a bigger number use more paper. I love how the students can see the pattern of one side decreasing and the other side increasing by ten. I also love how the flip book gives the students more room when they have to draw more ones.

Place Value Games: More or Less
This game set gives the students the number and then they have to count ten more, ten less, one more or one less.
If you laminate the cards they can use a dry erase marker to write on them.
I write the number on back so they can self check.
This set of game cards gives them a sentence starter but they have to count the number:
One More One Less with is Page 2
You can use these cards as a worksheet or cut them up for exit tickets as well.

The students draw a card, if they get the answer correct they roll a dice and then move that many spaces. Keep taking turns until someone wins. Easy and fun!

The students count the number and then they have to add one or ten depending on what the circle they land on says, if they get it correct they roll the dice and move that many spaces.

Math Games using Cubes on the iPad
Today is our 50th day of school so we played Race to 50. Each student rolled a dice, and then counted that many cubes. When they could make a ten they moved it over. The first person to 5 tens or 50 won.
This is an Investigations lesson on ways to make ten. The students counted out ten cubes in different ways and then wrote an equation to match. We just used the iPad so the students could make as many as they wanted without using paper to write them down.
We used ten frames to figure out the missing addend to ten. They rolled a dice and put that many cubes in the ten frame and then had to write an equation and figure out the answer.
I just love this app because connecting cubes are a huge part of math in first grade and there are so many ways you can use it.
This is another app I love for addition on the iPad:

Decomposing Posters
The students made posters to share with the class about decomposing in different ways. Each student was given a number that they had to decompose in 4 different ways and then share it with the class.

Place Value Dice
This is a game that I put at math stations to help my students practice place value. The student rolls a 10 sided dice(you can use a regular dice but you get more variety in the numbers by using a 10 sided dice) and then records the first number as tens. They roll it again and record the second number as ones. They use that number to complete the chart.

Quick Images: Place Value PowerPoint
This is a PowerPoint I use with my students to help them become more familiar with place value. Each slide gives the students 2 seconds to think about what number it is and then gives them time to think and then shows what number it is. The ones show up darker when it's downloaded.
Click on the right arrow to download a copy.
You can change the slide show speed once it's downloaded if you want.

Decomposing in Pictures
My students can decompose with the best of them but I don't think they REALLY understand all the ways that a number can be decomposed so we put it into pictures. We created each number on our own and then I took pictures of each step so they could really see how the number goes from lots of ones to tens and ones. We discussed what they noticed about the pictures.
When we were finished we filled in this worksheet and then decorated the number to emphasize that the number stays the same.
My Coworker had a great idea to use the language of the fastest way to create a number so the students had to use tens and ones. Then the slowest way where they used just ones. Lastly, the fancy way where they had to get creative and use tens and ones in different ways. Just the language of the slow way and fast way helps them understand there is more than one way to create a number.
