Expressionist portraits

Each student drew their self portrait with a pencil and then traced over it with a sharpie. I made 2 copies of each student portrait. One they painted realistically and the other with an expressionist point of view.

A Bad Case of the Stripes

After reading A Bad Case of the Stripes, we drew our self portrait with a pencil and then traced over it with a Sharpie. We glued strips of tissue paper over it in a pattern to create the stripes. I didn't have the kind of tissue paper that bleeds but if you do you could spray the tissue paper with water and then remove it once the color was transferred. The picture would be a little better to see. Either way they were fun to make.

Tie Dye

Each student got a paper towel and they used watercolor to paint it. The watercolor spread on the paper towel and created the Tie Dye look. Then the students used the directions below to draw a person with a pencil and traced over it with a permanent marker. Then they shadow cut their portraits and glued them onto the paper towel. Regular glue seeped through, so I would use a glue stick.

Here is the book it came from.
I LOVE this book for easy instructions on how to draw.

Glue Relief Self Portraits

This is a bad picture but they turned out really cute!
We drew our portrait on black construction paper and then I traced them with glue (it was too hard for the students to get the right amount of glue). They dried over night. The next day we used chalk to color in the face first and then we did the hair and shirt with the background last. We chose two colors to mix for the background. When they were finished we laminated them to get that shiny look. They were hung in the hall for our First Grade Program.
