Our author of the month is Kevin Henkes and I just love his "Birds" book so we tied it into our math curriculum and used mini birds to learn about ways to make 6. I had the students grab six of a certain color and then they used those birds to make six by putting some on the top and some on the bottom. They had to make six in three different ways. It's similar to the bunk bed problem but a smaller number. Click below to print:

Todd Parr Art
I just love this book by Todd Parr!
I saw this adorable art project on his website so I had to give it a try. We drew the face, hair and mouth and then water colored it. When it was dry we added the black outline and eyes with tempera and a q-tip. I cut them out and glued them onto a square piece of construction paper.
The students wrote: It's okay to____. to go with their art.

Cat's Colors
We read Cat's Colors and then painted 2 pieces of large construction paper, one with orange and white and the other with our favorite color and white. We drew a cat in different pieces on the back of the orange paper and then cut it out. We placed the pieces where we wanted them on the black piece of paper and then glued them down. We added details to the cat with a black sharpie. We used reinforcers for the white around the eye and then colored the inside with black sharpie. I might use paint next time...it was sort of hard to color in. While they were drawing the stripes I went around and shadow cut them out and they glued them to their favorite color piece of paper.
In the book Cat's favorite color is orange because it's the color of his mother so we wrote about why the color we chose was our favorite. Finally we graphed our favorite color.

Lion's Lunch?
We read Lion's Lunch and then drew our own lions. The students water colored them and then added pieces of yarn for the mane. I thought they were pretty funny:)

Old Black Fly
We read Old Black Fly and then learned a little about Jackson Pollock and splatter/drip painting. We drew a fly using the parts of an insect we learned about.
After learning about insect parts, we sorted insects.

Rainbow Fish
It was hard to get a good picture of this but it looks so BEAUTIFUL in person. You can really see the secondary colors shine through.
So all you have to do is cut about 3/4 inch strips of red, yellow and blue tissue paeper. Alternate colors vertically on a piece of Parchment Paper. Then alternate colors going horizontally on top.
Cut out and glue on the rainbow fish pattern and then cut it out when it's dry. Hang it in the window to see the beautiful colors shine through.
You can use any shape but I thought a fish would go well with
The Rainbow Fish book.

Lots of Spots Math
After reading the story the students made two of their own spotted animals. Each animal had to have less than ten spots. They added them together to create a teen number and then filled in the rest of the Teen Number Mat.

The Little Turtle
After reading The Little Turtle, we used pattern blocks to fill in his shape and then graphed them by how many blocks we used.
This is an old poem but one of my class favorites!
The Little Turtle
Author: Vachel Lindsay - 1879-1931
There was a little turtle.
He lived in a box.
He swam in a puddle.
He climbed on the rocks.
He snapped at a mosquito.
He snapped at a flea.
He snapped at a minnow.
And he snapped at me.
He caught the mosquito.
He caught the flea.
He caught the minnow.
But he didn't catch me.

The Very Greedy Triangle
This awesome idea was from Fun in First you can get the writing printable from her. The students loved this project. Their writing was fun to read. I forgot how great this book was! They just traced shapes and the eyes and then cut the rest on their own.
