End of the Year Projects

I didn't realized these were as big as they turned out to be but that's what made them really fun. I got this great idea from Third Grade Love . She has a free glasses printable on her blog. I just had them draw in the sunglasses and do the writing separately in more of a first grade format.

We made visors...

and pinwheels for fun!

First Grade Memories

For an end of the year memory page, each student drew their self portrait on a small piece of paper and then I shrunk them and made a border for the paper. They signed it and put their hand print in the middle. This would be cute as a stationary gift for parent volunteers also.
If you scan the image and copy it onto a word document you can change the color of the picture from black to any other color. I think that makes it look a little better.
Last year we drew pictures but I saw the self portraits on pinterest from Mrs. Johnsons Class and loved the idea.

Soaring into Second Grade

We made a cityscape and then I took pictures of the students soaring over them. I let them choose warm or cool colors for their sky.
This super cute idea was from Teacher Idea Factory

Tie Dye

Each student got a paper towel and they used watercolor to paint it. The watercolor spread on the paper towel and created the Tie Dye look. Then the students used the directions below to draw a person with a pencil and traced over it with a permanent marker. Then they shadow cut their portraits and glued them onto the paper towel. Regular glue seeped through, so I would use a glue stick.

Here is the book it came from.
I LOVE this book for easy instructions on how to draw.

Glue Relief Self Portraits

This is a bad picture but they turned out really cute!
We drew our portrait on black construction paper and then I traced them with glue (it was too hard for the students to get the right amount of glue). They dried over night. The next day we used chalk to color in the face first and then we did the hair and shirt with the background last. We chose two colors to mix for the background. When they were finished we laminated them to get that shiny look. They were hung in the hall for our First Grade Program.

Hand Prints

Each student drew a picture to make a frame for their hand print.
I scanned them and changed the color to make it blue.

Student Taught Lessons

Dear Families,

From May 23rd-June 2nd, the students will be participating in student taught lessons.  Each child will be responsible for teaching the rest of the class a fifteen minute lesson on something they are interested in or good at.  Some examples ideas are origami, crafts, drawing something particular, dance moves, etc…  Your child will need to have practiced what he/she is teaching by their scheduled teaching day so that he/she is prepared.  It is helpful if his/her lesson incorporates student participation.  For example: If a sport skill is being taught allow students time to practice.  Once I have received all the lesson plans from the students, I will send home a schedule.  If you are able to come in and assist your child in their teaching, that would be wonderful!

**Any materials above and beyond what we have here at school will need to be provided from home.  We have access to construction paper, markers, crayons, paint, scissors, glue, and some PE equipment.

Click HERE for a copy of the letter I send home to parents.

Here are some student examples:
We learned about shading.

We learned how to make a paper airplane.

We learned how to make kazoos.

And these yummy spider cookies!
