The Seven Continents

The students used the Pixie App to label the seven continents and draw a simple picture of themselves. They saved each picture and then put them into the Superimpose App. It's kind of hard to see but the Superimpose app gets rid of the white background and the students were able to place their pictures on the continent where they live.

These are the two pictures we used to Superimpose.

This is a closer look. They loved it!

Cardinal Directions

We are learning about cardinal directions, so we used a 101-200 chart and post-its to help practice. The students put an x on a number I called out and then I would tell the students to go North 3 boxes and East 2 boxes. The students would have to color in the number they landed on.

Kandinsky Style Family Trees

We stamped the circles with pen caps for the background.

We watched this video to look for shapes that
Kandinsky uses in his art.

First Grade Communities Project

My first grader had to do this for his class and I just loved the idea so I had to give it a try. Each student got to choose a place in our community to visit, learn about, and then make a box model. We even got to taste one of the products...yummy!

Andy Warhol Style Crayon Rubbings

Idaho crayon rubbings in the style of Andy Warhol.
Have the students trace a picture of Idaho (or wherever you live) with glue. Let it dry overnight. Fold a piece of paper into fourths. Have the students put the glued state under one section of their paper and cover it with crayon. Repeat for all four sections. Brighter colors seemed to show up better.

The Continents

We glued the 7 continents and 4 oceans onto a painted paper plate. The best part was singing "We've got the Whole Globe in Our Hands" by Dr. Jean. They wanted to hold their paper plates and sing and dance. The catchy tune makes learning the continents easy! There's also a cute ocean song on her Sing to Learn CD.

Me on the Map Book

Start small: Have the students draw their house.

They open their book and it reveals their state.

And then their Country.

And finally the world.

You start small and the book keeps opening up until you get to the full page of the world. Print the following pages 1-2 sided. You can cut and paste your state clip art from the website below.

Click HERE to get free state clip art.

You could paint it or use textured rubbings for some artsy fun or just color it, depending on how much time you have.

Here's a video of the book:

Home

The students drew a picture of when they were small and then they drew a picture of what they want to be when they grow up.

On one side the students made a collage of their house
on the other side the students drew a map of their room.
