Jelly Bean Probability

I gave each student a bag of jelly beans, they sorted them and then answered the probability questions. We made a circle with the jelly beans and drew lines from the dot in the middle to where two colors meet to create a pie chart.
 The bags had 4 colors in each: 9, 6, 4 and 2.

We also completed this free probability worksheet.

Ten More/Ten Less

Some of my students are still struggling with ten more/ten less so we used the Number Pieces App and the Pic Collage App to help visualize it.

Butterfly Symmetry

The students learned about symmetry by drawing a butterfly in the Amaziograph app. When they drew on one side it showed up on the other. I put it into a video using the Animoto app.

Greg Tang Math Resources

Here is a free iPad app based on Greg Tang's Kakooma game. The idea is that the students find the sum of two numbers and click on it. One of the numbers doesn't fit so they have to figure out what three numbers work together.

You can get his books online for free!

Here are just a few of the amazing free worksheets he has on his website.

Placing Numbers on the Number Line iPad Center

I love this app for practicing placing numbers on a number line. The students can make their guess, check it and then write the number in the correct spot. You can change the settings for the number line or make it random so the students really have to pay attention to where the number line starts and ends. We practiced with 0-20 and then 0-100. I had the students place the start and end number and then 5, 10 and 15. When going to 100, I had them write 25, 50 and 75 before placing five other numbers.

Story Problems on the iPad

I love to use storyboards in my classroom and this app has all the shapes and boards in one. I just gave the students a story problem and they had to drag and drop the pictures onto the board. They created a math sentence/equation to go with it.

Number Track

We are learning about where numbers go on a number track in math skills group so we created our own number tracks to 10. The students put the track below together and then wrote the numbers 0-10 on Post-its. They took the numbers off and then we put them back on together out of order to figure out the correct spot for each number. When all the numbers were placed on the number track we listened to Kim Sutton's random number CD. When they heard a number they took it off their number track, if they heard the number again they had to put it back on their number track in the correct spot. It gets a little tricky when the numbers are called out fast. You can randomly call out numbers yourself but I like her CD. Next we'll try numbers 10-20.

We snapped unifix cubes together to create a number track and then used that to help us place numbers on a paper number line.

Ways to Make 6

Birds [Book]
Our author of the month is Kevin Henkes and I just love his "Birds" book so we tied it into our math curriculum and used mini birds to learn about ways to make 6. I had the students grab six of a certain color and then they used those birds to make six by putting some on the top and some on the bottom. They had to make six in three different ways. It's similar to the bunk bed problem but a smaller number. Click below to print:

I found this from Buggy for First Grade  and thought it was great for a color review as well.

Math Exit Tickets

Our school has adopted a new program called KLT. As a part of the program each teacher is supposed to try a new assessment technique. I loved the exit ticket idea but didn't really know how to make it quick and easy for first grade. I have decided on one question Post-its. When I want to check for understanding I just give them a pre-printed Post-it, they answer it and stick it on the door. My tables are set up in groups of six, so I only need to make one sheet and print it out four times. Each student in a group will get a different question. Because this is new to me, my goal is to try and do three a week. I'll keep adding to the collection below as I make them. You can also get the printable Post-it template from Sugar Doodle.

I like the post-its but they are a little inconvenient so I've just been printing them out, cutting them down to size and then I have the students leave them on their desk when they are done.

Ten Beans

I absolutely loved this game.
It's pretty basic but great for the beginning of the year or for those kids that need the extra practice getting to know ten.
The student has to try and grab 10 beans, they put them on the ten frame and then tally if it was less than ten, exactly ten or more than ten.
